Illustration and its connection to fashion can be traced back to the very inception of design itself. International fashion illustrators like Garance Dore and The Lust List have been popular for quite some time now. But I missed seeing that art of illustration translated on the Indian scale with such amazing pieces coming down the runways back home. Sayon Chatterjee is the man behind label Sayon. He hand makes wooden opticals and frames – each bespoken for you. He has created a niche in the underserved eyewear space in India and takes it one step further by using locally sourced wood as the base for his products. I was caught by the simplicity of his designs and their high level of quality. Speaking of creating “The Brocade Sutra” – he is sold here in NYC at Saks. He walks us through the naissance of Sayon.
I first came across the label Morphe as I was searching for a dress for a special occasion. The second I saw the collection, I knew I had found something unique. As I started researching further, I discovered that the designer was none other than Shenali Sema at Morphe, someone whom I had been to boarding school with (talk about a small world). Shenali is one of the youngest creative directors is India and is the designer-in-chief of Morphe. Not only is she an extremely grounded human being, the finesse of her craft is self-evident.
Deepa and Jay Lakhani are the duo behind 8-year-old jewelry label – Deepa Gurnani. They were kind enough to invite me on a visit to their showroom and studio. Both hail from traditional design backgrounds. Deepa (originally from Mumbai) studied at Central Saint Martins and worked for design greats like Alexander McQueen, Fendi and Ungaro. Jay also went to design school at FIT and trained with Fine Jewelry greats from Tiffany and Bvlgari. They both had an early understanding of the quality standards expected to succeed in this business.
